Antidepressant Birth Defects

Have you taken Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, Effexor, Paxil, Symbyax or Luvox?

These drugs are classified as SSRI antidepressants. Many studies have suggested that these drugs and other SSRI antidepressants may cause very serious birth defects for the baby when prescribed to pregnant women.

Studies have suggested that using these drugs during pregnancy may cause a long list of birth defects, just a few of which are:

  • Abdominal Defects
These include Gastroschisis and Omphalocele, which are defects where the baby’s intestines are outside of the baby’s body.
  • Anal Atresia
This defect is where the rectum may not be connected to the anus, connected in the wrong spot or is closed off.
  • Clubfoot
This defect can involve one or both feet. The foot is rotated and the baby seems to be walking on the ankle.
  • Defects of the Head or Face
Craniosynostosis is the most common skull defect where the soft spaces between the skull bones close too soon or where the “soft spot” is absent or disappears too early.
  • Heart Defects
These serious birth defects of the heart include Atrial Septal Defects (ASD), Ventricular Septal Defects (VSD), Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, Pulmonary Atresia, Pulmonary Stenosis, Tetralogy of Fallot, Transposition of the Great Arteries and Coarctation of the Aorta.
  • PPHN
The FDA warned about this “serious, life-threatening lung condition.” Babies with PPHN are not able to get enough oxygen into their bloodstream and need intensive medical care.
  • Spina Bifida
This is a severe defect of the spine where some vertebrae are not completely formed. In some cases, the spinal cord will bulge out of an opening in the bones.

The FDA has issued Public Health Advisories and has made safety alerts with warnings to doctors to monitor closely all women being treated with Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, Effexor, Paxil, Symbyax or Luvox.
