Takata, a major Japanese auto part supplier, has recalled about 7.8 million vehicles, made by 10 different auto makers due to its airbags.

In a crash, the airbag inflator canister is exploding so fast it can send metal shards flying. This is linked to 4 fatalities and over 100 injuries.

Humidity

Takata Corporation has yet to find the cause of the airbag ruptures but they believe humidity, temperature and life of the product are factors.

As of right now, places including the Gulf States, South California, Georgia and South Carolina are first on the priority list for getting replacement airbags. If you live in the north, you may need to wait. If that’s the case, plan ahead by carpooling, using a different vehicle, or public transportation.

As of December 3, 2014, Honda has now declared a nationwide recall, no longer making the southern states the main priority. If you have a Honda that is on the list below, contact your car dealership immediately.

How do I know if my car is on the recall list?

Go to www.Safercar.gov and put in your car Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Your VIN can be found on your car, insurance card or registration card. You’ll then be able to see if your car is on the recall list and if it’s being recalled for the driver or passenger airbag.

*If your passenger airbag is being recalled you can still drive the vehicle, just don’t have anyone sit in the passenger seat.
