Asbestosis and Mesothelioma Lawyers

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is an aggressive and rare form of cancer that targets the lining of organs including the lungs, chest, and abdomen. Mesothelioma can almost always be traced to one risk factor; exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a natural fiber that was a popular element filling U.S homes and businesses in the late 19th century and became more widespread after World War II. Asbestos continued to be used in the 1970’s. Once asbestos is inhaled, it cannot be exhaled; it lingers in the lungs. With most patients this triggers mesothelioma 15+ years after exposure.

Types of Mesothelioma

There are three different types of mesothelioma that target different organs in the body.

Hi, I’m attorney Paul Harding, managing partner of Martin, Harding & Mazotti. And what is mesothelioma? Mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelium, the tissues that line the human internal organs. It is often incorrectly called a form of lung cancer, and that is not accurate. Mesothelioma is notorious for being very aggressive, difficult to diagnose and treat, and carrying a grim prognosis.

In general, only a quarter to a third of mesothelioma patients survive the first year after diagnosis, and just 10% survive for at least three years. Mesothelioma can almost always be traced to one risk factor, and that is exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a natural fiber that was widely used as insulation and manufactured late in the 20th century, especially in shipyards.

Once inhaled, it cannot be exhaled, instead, lingering in the body for decades. In some patients, this triggers mesothelioma 15 to 60 years later. This very long incubation period contributes to the disease’s low survival rate. If you or a loved one served in the Navy between 1930 and 1980, you should know that you run a substantially increased risk of contracting this rare form of cancer called mesothelioma.

Due to unregulated conditions, asbestos was widely used as insulation, ceiling tiles, drywall, cements, and manufacturing parts until late in the 20th century. Not knowing this natural fiber was extremely harmful; workers handled this material with little-to-no protection. In the “Occupation and Trades” section below, you will find industries and professions of people who may have worked with asbestos during the late 20th century. If you or a loved one worked in any of these jobs during that time period, you may be entitled to compensation.

Secondary Asbestos Exposure

Without knowing the harm asbestos has on the body, the families of workers were being exposed. When the worker walked in the home, the tiny fibers would stick to their articles of clothing, and then be inhaled by family members. Also, the household chore of handling and shaking the clothes to be washed caused the asbestos particles to become airborne. This has the same effect of asbestos exposure without even stepping on the job site.
