Social Security Disability Overview

Types of Benefits

The Social Security Administration (SSA) offers several types of benefits:

• Disability Insurance Benefits – Disability Insurance Benefits were designed to provide disabled workers with income. Like any other insurance policy, you are eligible to receive benefits if you paid premiums every month by having Social Security “taxes” withheld from your paycheck.
• Retirement Benefits – Retirement Benefits are available to those who have paid enough Social Security taxes (through payroll withholding) to be fully insured for retirement benefits.
• Survivors Benefits – Survivors Benefits are available to direct relatives of deceased workers who have paid enough money (withholding from monthly paycheck) into Social Security to be insured for retirement and survivors benefits.
• Supplemental Security Income (SSI) – SSI provides benefits for low-income individuals who may not be eligible for Disability Insurance. This program is also for children who have disabilities.

A claim for benefits must be filed with the government and requires verbal and written evidence proving the nature and extent of the disability. If an initial determination by the government finds that a person does not qualify for Social Security Disability benefits, a right to appeal the decision exists.
