Baby formula and milk fortifier products made with cow’s milk can put infants — particularly low-birthweight and premature infants — at risk of developing NEC, a severe and potentially deadly gastrointestinal disease. This includes some products by popular baby formula brands Enfamil and Similac.

Despite recent evidence that supports this risk, there have been no Enfamil, Similac, or cow’s milk-based baby formula recalls yet.

Multiple lawsuits have been filed claiming the manufacturers of cow’s milk-based formula failed to warn parents and caregivers of the health risks associated with these products. Lawsuits also allege companies marketed their cow’s milk-based products as medically endorsed, equally safe, and nutritionally equal to human milk, while branding and targeting their ads to parents of premature infants.
