Current Updates

Update, May 2026:
In May 2026, scrutiny of Roblox’s impact on children expanded at both the policy and platform levels. U.S. health officials released a Surgeon General advisory warning about the potential physical and psychological harms of excessive screen time among children, while U.K. regulators considered stricter limits on social media and messaging features for users under 16, including proposed restrictions affecting Roblox.

Roblox began rolling out new age-based account protections in multiple countries to improve child safety and parental oversight, as it continued to face criticism and legal challenges over the adequacy of its safeguards for younger users.

Update, April 2026:
On April 15, Roblox reached a significant legal settlement with the State of Nevada, agreeing to pay $10 million and implement nationwide changes to strengthen protections for young users. The agreement also included additional funding for child-safety awareness initiatives and commitments to enhance age-verification processes and parental-control tools. The settlement reflected mounting pressure on the company to address allegations that it had failed to adequately safeguard children on its platform.

Update, March 2026:
In March 2026, Roblox introduced new technology and faced ongoing regulatory and legal pressure.  The company announced an AI-powered chat feature that automatically rephrases messages that violate safety policies, aiming to improve communication while maintaining content standards.

Meanwhile, Indonesia moved toward implementing age-based restrictions on access to platforms like Roblox to combat issues like cyberbullying and screen addiction.

Update, February 2026:
In February 2026, Roblox continued to face mounting legal and regulatory scrutiny over its impact on young users. A lawsuit filed by an Ohio school district accused Roblox and other game developers of intentionally designing their platforms with behavior-modifying features that promote addiction among children. The suit also alleged that the company failed to adequately disclose the risks of excessive gameplay and its effects on students’ mental health.

International regulators also intensified oversight, with the Netherlands’ Authority for Consumers and Markets launching an investigation into whether Roblox complies with the European Union’s Digital Services Act and sufficiently protects minors.

Update, January 2026:
On January 14, Roblox introduced new age-verification measures, informing parents that it may use brief facial recordings via third-party software to enable certain chat features for users over age 9, raising additional privacy concerns.

On the research front, Roblox faced growing scrutiny from researchers and parents alike over its impact on youth safety and behavior. Academic research published in the International Journal of Adolescence and Youth warned that metaverse games like Roblox may contribute to maladaptive usage patterns, highlighting how immersive, pleasure-driven environments can harm children’s and teens’ development and potentially foster unhealthy behavioral habits. At the same time, legal challenges continued to mount, with claims that the company was exploiting vulnerable youth to maximize engagement and profits.

Update, December 2025:
The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation created multidistrict litigation (MDL) 3166 and transferred the cases pending in federal court in various districts around the country, alleging sexual abuse and exploitation involving Roblox and messaging platforms Discord, Snap, and Meta, to the Northern District of California, where Judge Richard Seeborg will oversee the proceedings. While the MDL will be the appropriate forum for sexual abuse and exploitation cases, it will not be a forum for gaming addiction cases.

Update, November 2025:
Cases have been filed in 18 judicial districts across the United States alleging platform-enabled child exploitation and sexual abuse. It is expected that a petition will be submitted under 28 USC Section 1407 to the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) requesting the creation of a Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) to centralize these related federal civil cases from across the country into a single court for pretrial proceedings.

What Is Roblox

Roblox is an online gaming platform that lets its (primarily child and teen) users create and play games. Roblox operates more like a digital universe composed of countless games produced by its players than traditional video games with an established framework. Avatar customization, social interaction, and participation in thousands of user-generated events are all available to players while they make purchases using Robux, the platform’s digital currency.

The platform was introduced in 2006 by Roblox Corporation, a San Mateo, California-based company. With millions of active users under the age of 13 every day and over $2.1 billion in gross profits, it has become one of the most well-known gaming platforms globally over the years. High user engagement and social connections are critical to its success.

Lawsuits allege that Roblox Corporation purposefully designed the platform to include addictive features to keep children playing for prolonged periods, making impulsive purchases, and interacting with strangers, usually without meaningful oversight.

How Roblox Put Children at Risk

Dangers of Roblox

Roblox’s vast and unregulated ecosystem fostered an atmosphere that allowed predators and dangerous content to flourish and continue to persist. Major risks consist of:

  • Exploitation by online predators: In-game chats and private messages were used for grooming, coercion, and exploitation.
  • Inappropriate content: Children were exposed to harmful material when violent and sexually explicit games masqueraded as safe entertainment.
  • Financial exploitation: Kids were coerced into purchasing virtual products with actual money, which occasionally resulted in unauthorized transactions.

Delayed Introduction of Safety Features

In response to growing criticism and investigations such as the Hindenburg Report, which accused Roblox of putting user growth and revenues ahead of safety, the business implemented new safety safeguards in November 2024. Including:

  • More robust parental controls: Activity approvals, time limits, and remote account management.
  • Communication restrictions: Children under the age of thirteen are not allowed to receive direct messages unless their parents have given their consent.
  • Content Ratings: Games are classified according to their level of intensity, with restrictions for younger users.
  • Restricted activities: Users under the age of thirteen are not permitted to utilize features that include free form writing or drawing.

Although these improvements represent a positive development, they are not only inadequate but also follow years of harm imposed on susceptible users.

Effects of Roblox's Negligence

Roblox’s inaction highlights a concerning prioritization of financial gain over child safety. The platform violated the trust of parents and kids by permitting a dangerous environment to continue for years. Families are calling for accountability for:

  • Negligence: The failure to shield minors from known dangers.
  • Product Liability: Running a platform containing harmful features.
  • Emotional Distress: Allowing for conditions that led to serious harm.
  • Consumer fraud: Deceiving families about the safety of the platform.

What To Do If Your Child Was Harmed by Roblox

Instances of grooming, exploitation, and inadequate security procedures by Roblox present a worrisome image.

You don’t have to deal with it alone if you’ve seen any of the problems mentioned, such as predatory interactions, explicit content, inadequate responsiveness by the platform, or if your child has disclosed any signs of online grooming. The vital first step is to recognize these indicators.

You might have a case against those responsible if any of these situations sound familiar to you or if you believe a child could be at risk. For a free, no-obligation consultation, get in touch with Harding Mazzotti today.

How Exploitation Allegedly Takes Place on Roblox

Voice chat, direct messages, and in-game chat are purportedly used by predators to establish initial contact. User-generated content (UGC) is used to create problematic “experiences”. Grooming techniques are used to establish trust before moving interactions off platform to unmonitored external apps like Discord or Snapchat.

Crucial Signs for Parents to Look For

  • Changes in the way your child behaves when interacting online, such as withdrawal, nervousness, or secrecy.
  • Atypical device use or abrupt, suspicious changes in gaming behavior.
  • Requests to move conversations off of Roblox or for personal information.
  • Obsession with particular platform users or games, especially if they become secretive.
  • Requests for Robux for odd or frequent, inexplicable reasons.

Actions Parents Can Take

  • Open Communication: Encourage reporting discomfort and start continuing discussions about online safety.
  • Parental Controls: Set up and oversee Roblox features while being aware of their limitations.
  • Monitoring Tools: Utilize ethically used third-party monitoring solutions.
  • Reporting Abuse: Be aware of where and how to report questionable Roblox activity.
  • Seek Support: Make use of services for victim advocacy, legal advice, and mental health specialists who specialize in online trauma.
