In celebration of this special collection of communities, The Spirit of CNY is here to recognize local heroes, activities, businesses, and organizations that inspire us every day. Join us while we explore all that Central New York has to offer.

About CNY

Central New York is the central upstate region of New York State, covering over 3,000 square miles. CNY is home to cities including Oswego, Cortland, Oneonta, Herkimer, Auburn, Syracuse (the largest city in the region). Thanks to Syracuse University, Syracuse is one of the busier cities in the area, serving as a regional center for entertainment, museums, and galleries. Throughout Central New York, metropolitan cities coexist alongside rural farming communities. A variety of state parks are some of the key attractions in central New York that you won’t want to miss. Green Lakes State Park is located 9 miles east of Syracuse and contains two glacial lakes. Gilbert Lake State Park can be found North of Oneonta and is recognized as the region’s “wildlife” park, invites campers and hikers alike. Other key features of the Central New York region include the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, the Erie Canal, waterfalls, and much more.

About the Host

Don McPherson is the 2021 recipient of the William Pearson Tolley Medal for Distinguished Leadership in Lifelong Learning, presented by Syracuse University’s School of Education and, the 2020 National Football Foundation’s Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football.  These honors signify a lifelong mission to use a unique social position to serve the greater good.

McPherson was an All-America quarterback at Syracuse University and is a veteran of the NFL and Canadian Football League. As captain of the undefeated 1987 Syracuse football team, McPherson set 22 school records, led the nation in passing and won more than 18 national “player of the year” awards.
